You know when sometimes you don’t really know what you’ve got … until you don’t have it anymore? Well I didn’t really appreciate yoga until I got chronic lower back pain. There’s a bunch of reasons to start your very own practice today, but here are my top 3 biggest reasons:
Helps you stay mentally sane
In a time where we’re blasted by emails and struggling to keep up with everything happening on social media, not to mention having to do normal human activities, it is imperative that we absolutely remember to focus and live in the present moment. Instead of spending your time regretting, worrying, planning, or in front of digital media, unplug, get up and focus on the here and now. Yoga is one of the best ways of doing just that. I find that when I focus on my breath everything else just melts away and when I come back to whatever it was I was doing before I am much more focused and my mind is so much more clear. It’s easy to say to yourself you don’t have time to spare for yoga, but in reality when I pick back up on my daily tasks I feel a lot more agile and mentally nimble and generally less stressed out due to decreased levels of cortisol (stress hormones) during and after yoga.
Helps you move gracefully
Whatever you’re doing at the moment, whether it’s everyday kneeling, bending or reaching for something on the top cabinet shelf, yoga enables you to do it with more ease and mobility so you have more fluid movements. This in turn helps to prevent injury that normally occurs when you have tightness in the joints from lack of movement. For those of you who sit at home on your laptops, if you don’t feel it today, trust me, someday you will. Prevention is the best medicine, starting today.
If you have sleeping issues yoga can also help in this regard. When we are less stressed we sleep better, and when we sleep better we are less stressed. I know, it’s a vicious cycle, but yoga can help you nip it in the bud.
Want a nice toned body? Yoga relies on body weight which results in lean, long muscles, not bulk. My personal favorite motto is “beauty lies in strength”.
Helps you radiate confidence
It’s been said that yoga helps boost your inner self-confidence, which is vital since people can generally get a sense of your mood when they’re around you. Nothing radiates confidence better than a great posture and doing your best work with intention and purpose.
There is so much to be said about the benefits of doing yoga for your mind, body, and spirit, that if you simply did it for the sake of 10% of all the reasons in the world, chances are you’ll notice the effects almost immediately.
I know it helped me and I hope it does the same for you. If you have questions or are having trouble getting started, let me know!
